About

This is the private blog from Benedikt Schonlau, Managing Director at viable.works.

After my studies in mechatronics at Technical University OWL I started my career as a System Engineer at IAV.  At IAV I was accepted into the career program and got project lead for active safety projects afterwards.

2012 I got nominated as a Head of Department at IAV. Under my responsibility we build an organization for Active Safety, Light Assistance and Vehicle-to-X communication with more than 100 engineers, starting from 20 and ran projects in 🇩🇪, 🇺🇸,🇫🇷, 🇸🇪, 🇯🇵 during that time.

Besides industrial engineering topics, we always worked on innovative development projects at IAV. The most fancy one, was the demo at the CES together with Microsoft and Cubic that was developed under my responsibility. Check the video below for more details.

IAV’s Automated Demo Vehicle developed together with Microsoft and Cubic.

After my time at IAV, I changed to consulting4drive, IAV’s management and technology consulting subsidiary. Besides other projects we helped the Honda Legend Automated Driving System to see the light of the day.  More details can be found here: Honda Legend to the 🇯🇵 roads with official type designation for Level 3.

In 2021 I was called to take over the CEO role of an automotive semiconductor startup – the most challenging position until now. After the establishment of an Automotive Grade development process, some customer success and many technical innovations, we go separate ways again.

Now I am running my own consulting company,  viable.works. At viable.works we focus on consulting topics, where technology meets products. Close to the market, close to the technology and close to engineering at the same time. With the understanding of all different worlds, we help customers to navigate through the jungle of industrialization and to reach the market goals in quality, time and money.
